Whether you’re training, studying, or stepping into a new role, a Learning Needs Analysis (LNA) helps you figure out what skills or knowledge you need to develop next—and how to get there.
What is a Learning Needs Analysis?
An LNA is a structured way to identify the gap between where you are now and where you want (or need) to be. It helps you focus your energy and time on learning that’s relevant and impactful.
Why Should You Do One?
- Clarity: Know exactly what to work on
- Direction: Set clear, achievable learning goals
- Efficiency: Save time by avoiding irrelevant training
- Confidence: Build skills that truly support your goals
When to Do It:
- Starting a new course or placement
- Beginning a new job or role
- Preparing for a qualification or accreditation
- When you’re feeling stuck or unsure about what to learn next
How to Do It:
- Reflect – What do you already know? What are your strengths?
- Identify goals – What are you working towards (e.g. qualification, new role, career change)?
- Assess gaps – What knowledge, skills or experience do you need to gain?
- Plan – Research training options, mentorship, reading, or practice opportunities.
- Review regularly – Your needs may shift as you progress.
